Recurring client jobs, document requests and sign-off for accounting practices.

Blotter is the job workflow for a small Australian bookkeeping or accounting practice with 1 to 15 people. It handles recurring client jobs like the quarterly BAS, document requests that clients answer through a private upload link, reviewer sign-off, and time exported for your own billing. It does not lodge anything with the ATO or calculate tax.

What it does

  • Add reviewers and preparers with their own hourly rates; preparers see only jobs assigned to them
  • Start a client's quarterly BAS job from a template with a checklist, document requests and a fixed fee
  • Send clients a reminder with a private upload link so they can send files without an account
  • Have a preparer submit the finished job and a different reviewer sign it off with a recorded note
  • Roll a signed-off job forward to the next period
  • Record time at each person's rate and export approved time and fees as a CSV for your billing
  • Let an assistant prepare roll-forwards, reminders and exports for a person to approve or decline
  • Back up the whole practice and erase a client file

What it promises

  • Blotter does not lodge anything with the ATO, calculate tax, GST or due dates, keep client books, or give advice; due dates are entered by people.
  • A reviewer, not the preparer, signs off a job, and the sign-off is recorded with a note.
  • An approved billing export never changes afterwards, and each time entry or fixed fee can be exported only once.
  • An assistant can only prepare work; every roll-forward, reminder and export waits until a person approves or declines it, and the decision is recorded.
  • Removing a team member's access takes effect at once.
  • Undoing a client-list import keeps any client who already has jobs, and the journal says what was kept and why.
  • After a client file is erased, an older backup cannot restore it unless you also supply the newer backup that records the erasure.
